Here is a little something about me. My name is David L. “Grey Wolf Means. I am the “Uka” Chief of the Eastern Cherokees of New York, Tribe. As I was growing up in Brooklyn, New York my parents always told me never “forget who you are and who your ancestors were”.  My father, uncle and aunt always said that “you have Cherokee blood” and they all had the strong features of Natives of Turtle Island ( the original name of America). On my mothers side of the family was Blackfoot they also kept telling me about that side of my heritage.

In the mid to late nineties I was driving a bus to the Foxwoods casino. I met a fellow native whose name is Redhawk, he told me about a group in Brooklyn called the Ohatchee Cherokees. He had given me an application to join his group. I had filed it out but the Creator had said to me now is not the time so I did not send it in.  In 2004 the Creator came to me and said now is your time so I sent in the application. Soon after I received a call from Chief Sitting-Sun, we spoke and shortly there after my son and I joined his group. In January of 2005 I was made a Vice Chief. By August of 2006 the Clan Mothers and members voted to follow me and that is when the Clan Mothers made me a full Chief. We became the Eastern Cherokees of New York, Tribe. We are now working on getting a place that will become our Community House. The Community House would contain a food pantry to feed those in need, space for classes to be held and meeting rooms. There is also the goal of someday acquiring land for tribal use.
